The thermal solar installation "Sun Island Almere" consisting of more than 7000 m2 of solar collectors and a heat exchange station was inaugurated that day. Many guests found the way to the island to view the site up and running. A residential area with around 2,700 households is directly connected to "Sun Island Almere", and is the first residential area in the Netherlands, which now is partially heated by solar energy. 520 solar panels contribute to the city's production of hot water and lower hereby the CO2 emission by 50%. Among the guest speakers at the official grand opening by the energy company Nuon was the Dutch astronaut Wubbo Ockels who in his speech highlighted the benefits and opportunities related to solar energy. Finally, all guests had the opportunity to closely inspect the solar installation and heat exchange station. |
